Birth order in the very long-run: Estimating first-born premiums between 1850 and 1940– with Joseph Price, Krysztof Karbownik, Anthony Wray, Angela Cools, and Siobhan O'Keefe
This study explores how birth order differences between siblings affect household environment and parental investments on children's human capital accumulation and their subsequent labor market outcomes. We use U.S. Census records to document these effects over a 90-year period and find remarkably stable results despite changes in economic, demographic, social, and policy landscapes between 1850-1940.
